Engineering Career

Career in Engineering

Recently, the higher education trends in India have shown that most of the high school students are choosing engineering as their career.  While all of them are not in right path, still some of them choose this honestly and sincerely.  Unfortunately, the at least few thousands of engineering seats in the colleges in India fall vacant at the end of admission season each year and colleges struggle to get students and end up by admitting students who are either not interested or those without enough ability to pursue this path.
If taken seriously, this is one of the best roads towards innovation and exposing the innate talents.

The main question arising in the mind of a parent or student is how to choose an engineering branch and the institution to study.  The answer is - first of all, you should have at least two or three options of branches which should be purely based on the interest.  The reason for joining should not be that because somebody told to do engineering.  It is purely individual and it should always be.  No one can predict exactly what is going to happen in one's career.  So, do a proper study about the branches, choose the best one depending on your interest and then choose where to study.  Now a days, there are lot of options to find out the quality of an institution.  The best choice and first choice should be the internet - the website which speaks about the institution, the facilities, infrastructure, faculty standards, pass percentage, etc.  If the proposed institution is near to the house, student feedback can easily be taken.  This is one of the main yardstick to measure the institution's reputation and goodwill.  This inquiry should start at least a couple of months before the actual admission process.  AICTE is the statutory body which approves the institution and most of the websites have the information on the faculty members in their website.  It is mandatory for an institution to put up the details in the website.  Usually, students give a little importance for the lab setup in the college.  But this is one of the important factors that decide the standard of the skills earned by a student during his college life.  So, include the lab infrastructure also in the findings of the institution.

In India, there are abundant engineering colleges and most of the years, many thousands of seats fall vacant throughout the country.  That doesn't mean engineering education is bad, but at the same time, it means, it is highly competitive.  For those students who do their engineering in branches other than Computer Science,  it is very much challenging to get into a core company.  For this, skill is very important.  If the organization is one which develop branded products, it is very important that the student secure enough skills.  For a research kind of firm, that may not be mandatory.  Good theoretical knowledge and practical skills are the signs of an excellent engineering.
